Nelson Boxing Gym Raises Tens of Thousands at Sold-Out Gala

Victory Boxing proved that a small gym with a big heart can fill a room when it matters most.

The Nelson organization sold out the Rutherford Hotel last Friday with 330 guests eager to support community boxing programs that serve hundreds of people each week. Organizer Paul Hampton brought together an impressive lineup including world champion boxer Lani Daniels, former Kiwis rugby captain Ruben Wiki, and actor Cohen Holloway for the third annual "Night with the Stars" fundraiser.

The evening raised tens of thousands of dollars that will go directly toward keeping the gym's doors open six days a week. More importantly, it showed how deeply the community values what Victory Boxing provides.

Daniels emerged as the night's breakout star, sharing her journey to becoming a world champion while staying in Nelson through the weekend to connect with locals. "Her story is just amazing, and she's got the most incredible personality," Hampton said. "Everywhere she went she was so engaging and could get on with anyone, just so genuine."

The boxer's down-to-earth approach despite her elite achievements resonated with attendees who gave glowing feedback both during and after the event. Hampton summed it up simply: "Everyone had a really wonderful time. It was a really, really special night."

The Ripple Effect

Victory Boxing's reach extends far beyond one glamorous fundraiser. The gym welcomes hundreds of people through its doors each week, creating a space where community members can build confidence, fitness, and connections.

About 40 volunteers keep the operation running smoothly across six days of programming. The organization maintains an active presence in Nelson even beyond its scheduled sessions, showing up where the community needs them most.

Friday's sold-out event proved that when you invest in people, they invest right back.
