All Blacks Legend Steve Hansen Joins Manly Sea Eagles

A coaching legend who led New Zealand's All Blacks to World Cup glory is crossing codes to help rebuild an Australian rugby league club.

Sir Steve Hansen, the mastermind behind some of rugby union's greatest triumphs, has signed on as football performance director for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. He'll start working with the team for the 2027 NRL season.

The move comes as rookie head coach Kieran Foran looks to elevate the struggling Sydney club. Foran, who only retired as a player at the end of 2025, was thrust into coaching mid-season when the previous coach was suddenly fired.

The Sea Eagles showed immediate improvement under Foran's leadership, earning him a permanent three-year contract in July. But the team struggled late in the season and missed the playoffs entirely.

That's where Hansen comes in. The veteran coach brings decades of elite sporting knowledge from his time transforming New Zealand rugby into a dominant force.

"We don't want to simply talk about getting better, we want to put the right people and structures in place to make it happen," Foran said in a statement. He praised Hansen's ability to challenge teams to think bigger and raise their standards.

Hansen isn't completely new to rugby league. He briefly worked with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2020 and 2021, though COVID-19 travel restrictions limited his impact.
