Wigan Names Square After Trailblazer Sir Billy Boston

A Welsh rugby star who faced racial prejudice in his youth will now be remembered forever in the heart of the town that embraced him.

Wigan Council announced it's renaming Believe Square to Sir Billy Boston Square, honoring the rugby league legend who died last month at 92. The square already holds his bronze statue, unveiled in 2016.

Born in Cardiff in 1934, Billy Boston loved rugby union but faced discrimination that kept him off his hometown team. Everything changed when rugby league scouts noticed him during national service in northern England.

Wigan signed the 19-year-old in 1953, and he became a phenomenon. Boston scored 478 tries in 488 games for Wigan, reaching 100 tries in just 68 matches. He helped the team win three Challenge Cups and a Championship.

His impact went far beyond the scoreboard. In 1954, he became the first black British player to tour Australia and New Zealand with Great Britain's national team. His success opened doors for countless athletes who followed.

Council leader Nazia Rehman called Boston "more than a sporting legend" but "a pioneer, an inspiration, and someone who brought immense pride to Wigan." The square renaming happened after his funeral at Wigan Warriors' stadium last week.

Boston received his knighthood in 2025, becoming rugby league's first knight. Officials announced it early due to concerns about his dementia, which he had battled for over a decade.

The Ripple Effect

The renamed square means every person who walks through will encounter Boston's name and legacy. Parents will tell their children his story. Students will learn how he overcame prejudice through excellence and determination.

Wigan's chief executive Kris Radlinski captured it perfectly: "Children will walk with their families, people who never had the privilege to see Billy play will see his name and ask who he was, and another generation will tell his story."

Boston also has statues in Cardiff and outside Wembley Stadium, recognition for helping break down racial barriers across British sport. His career total of 571 tries was surpassed by only one player in top-class rugby league history.

The square where Billy Boston stands in bronze now bears his name, a permanent reminder that greatness and character triumph over prejudice.
