Nepal Family Survives Floods in 'Miracle' Turquoise Home

When flash floods tore through Trishuli, Nepal, most homes folded like paper, bridges collapsed, and the river rose nine meters in just 30 minutes. But on the second floor of a turquoise house, Lakshmi Pandey, her husband, daughter, mother-in-law, and a neighbor stood watching their world disappear.

Lakshmi was at their shop when she realized the flood was coming. She ran the five minutes home as fast as she could because her daughter and mother-in-law were inside.

"The flood is coming, we need to run," she told her mother-in-law. Within minutes, a surge of ice, rock, mud and debris triggered by a broken Himalayan glacier carved through their valley town.

The old bridge broke first, and water came rushing from above. "I realized that we could no longer escape by running outside," Lakshmi said.

Trapped inside their home near the riverbank, the family watched from their balcony as floodwaters ripped through the bottom floor. Her son was safe at school.

"Water was hitting the house from both sides, and the whole house started shaking," Lakshmi recalled. It felt like the massive 2015 Nepal earthquake all over again.

As houses around them collapsed, the couple thought they wouldn't survive. "I thought my son would be all alone now, an orphan," Lakshmi said.

Her husband Prakash decided they should stay together for what felt like their last moments while "chanting the God's name." Lakshmi told herself they needed to be patient.

Then something remarkable happened. Four neighbors risked their own lives and built a makeshift bridge to reach them. "Somehow, they managed to get all of us out safely," she said.

Why This Inspires

The turquoise house is now called the "miracle house" on social media, and engineers think they know why it survived. The house appears built on solid rock with reinforced concrete, and a small headland upstream likely protected it from the main force of the flood.

But the real miracle isn't just the engineering. It's the neighbors who risked everything to save five people. It's a mother's patience in the face of terror. It's a family that chose to stay together.

On Monday, the family walked back through their standing home to assess the damage. What had been their town was now a field of mud, but Lakshmi expressed gratitude that her family, including her son, had been "reborn."

While rescue teams continue searching for nearly 300 workers trapped in tunnels and the death toll surpasses 1,000, one turquoise house stands as a beacon of hope in Nepal's darkest hour.
