Netherlands Wind Farm Builds Reef to Protect Marine Life

Wind turbines in the North Sea are getting an underwater upgrade that helps sea life thrive while generating clean electricity.

The new OranjeWind offshore wind farm is installing 66 specially designed reef cubes across 11 turbines in Dutch waters. Energy companies RWE AG and TotalEnergies partnered with marine solutions company ARC marine to create one of the largest artificial reefs in the North Sea.

The cubes are made entirely from recycled materials and designed to attract local species like cod and oysters. They'll remain in place for the entire lifespan of the turbines, creating permanent habitats for marine life.

Building massive wind turbines in the ocean typically disrupts underwater ecosystems, but this project takes a different approach. The artificial reefs actually enhance marine habitats rather than destroy them, turning potential environmental damage into ocean restoration.

The OranjeWind project itself will generate 795 megawatts of clean power when complete. That electricity will supply local communities and help create green hydrogen for regional industries, cutting carbon emissions by 5 million tons annually.

The Ripple Effect

The Netherlands continues to prove that ambitious environmental goals are achievable with creative thinking. The country's wind energy capacity reached 11.7 gigawatts by the end of 2024, with offshore wind farms contributing 19% of that total.

Even better, the Dutch met their offshore wind expansion goals a full year ahead of schedule. Wind turbines already provided 18% of the nation's total electricity in 2022, and that number keeps climbing.

This dual purpose approach to renewable energy shows how infrastructure projects can solve multiple problems at once. Instead of choosing between clean energy and ocean health, the Netherlands found a way to advance both goals simultaneously.

The reef cubes prove that with thoughtful design, human progress and environmental protection aren't competing interests. They're partners working toward a healthier planet for everyone.
