New E-Bike Tracker Works for 12 Months Without Charging

Losing an e-bike to thieves might be about to get a lot harder, thanks to a tracking device that keeps working for 12 months straight without needing a charge.

Estonian tech company Comodule just unveiled Astra, a next-generation tracking system designed to be built directly into e-bikes starting in 2028. While most GPS trackers die after a month or two, Astra keeps monitoring your bike's location for up to a year, even when it's sitting unused in storage.

The breakthrough comes from smarter power management. Astra normally draws energy from the e-bike's battery during regular use, but switches to ultra-efficient mode when the bike sits idle. That means if a thief stashes your bike in a warehouse for months hoping you'll give up searching, you'll still know exactly where it is.

Location accuracy gets a major upgrade too. Beyond standard GPS, Astra adds Wi-Fi positioning technology that works inside buildings where satellite signals struggle. If your stolen bike ends up in an apartment complex or parking garage, you'll get precise indoor coordinates instead of just a general neighborhood.

The system runs on Cat-1bis cellular connectivity, providing reliable connections in dense cities and remote areas alike. Owners can track their bike through an app, receive theft alerts, remotely lock or immobilize the bike, and share access with family members.

Comodule already powers connectivity for over 850,000 electric vehicles across 11 years of operation. By partnering with major manufacturers, the company makes advanced security accessible to everyday riders rather than just luxury bike owners. Better tracking technology could reduce e-bike theft rates overall, making cities safer for the growing number of people choosing pedal power over cars.

The layered security approach addresses a real problem: physical locks slow thieves down, but determined criminals can defeat almost any lock given enough time. Astra ensures that even if someone cuts through your lock, they're stealing a bike that constantly broadcasts its location and can be shut down remotely.
