New EV Battery Hits 620-Mile Range in Vehicle Tests
A breakthrough battery technology just passed real-world vehicle testing with enough range to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a single charge. The solid-state batteries could make electric vehicles practical for even the longest road trips.
Electric vehicles just took a giant leap toward ending range anxiety forever.
Chinese battery maker Gotion High Tech has begun testing all-solid-state batteries in actual vehicles, achieving an impressive 620-mile range on a single charge. That's enough to drive from Boston to Washington, D.C. without stopping, or cross most European countries twice over.
The company reached this milestone after building its second-generation production facility. The 2 GWh factory uses entirely homegrown technology and equipment, with Gotion holding over 30 patents for the manufacturing process.
Volkswagen clearly sees the potential. The German automaker invested $1.2 billion in Gotion back in 2020, becoming its largest shareholder with a 26% stake.
The new GEMSTONE batteries deliver serious performance improvements over last year's version. Ion conductivity jumped 60%, cell capacity increased 150%, and the batteries maintained full performance in brutal temperature tests ranging from negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 176 degrees.

Perhaps most impressive is how quickly the technology is scaling. Gotion completed a pilot production line last May with a 90% yield rate, meaning nine out of ten batteries coming off the line meet quality standards.
The Ripple Effect
This breakthrough represents more than just one company's achievement. Several Chinese automakers plan to begin small-batch testing of solid-state batteries in vehicles by late 2026, with mass production targeted for 2030.
The technology could transform electric vehicle adoption worldwide. Longer range addresses one of the biggest concerns preventing people from switching from gas-powered cars. Combined with improving charging infrastructure, 600-plus mile batteries make EVs viable for virtually any driving scenario.
Gotion is also developing a related technology called quasi-solid-state batteries. These G-Yuan batteries promise similar 620-mile ranges while potentially being easier and cheaper to manufacture.
The timing couldn't be better. Global electric vehicle sales continue climbing as countries push to reduce carbon emissions from transportation. Better batteries mean more people can make the switch without compromising on convenience or capability.
With Volkswagen and Audi set to use these batteries in upcoming models, drivers around the world may soon experience truly long-range electric motoring.
