New Ghost Shark Species Found Off Costa Rica Coast

Scientists discovered a new species of deep-sea fish living off Costa Rica's Pacific coast, proving that our oceans still hold plenty of surprises.

The newly identified species, named Rhinochimaera costaricana, is a type of ghost shark that has been gliding through Costa Rican waters at depths up to 2,580 feet. These strange-looking creatures belong to an ancient group of fish called chimaeras that have existed for hundreds of millions of years.

Researchers from Costa Rica's Fisheries and Aquaculture Institute, the University of Costa Rica, and Brazil's Federal University of Pará made the discovery official this month. They studied three male specimens collected between 2000 and 2023, carefully measuring 49 different body features and comparing them to more than 90 individuals from other known ghost shark species.

The Costa Rican ghost shark has its own distinct look. It sports a shorter snout than its relatives, a taller first dorsal fin, wider spacing between its fins, and fewer bumpy tubercles along its tail.

DNA testing confirmed what the physical measurements suggested. The genetic analysis showed clear differences between the Costa Rican specimens and other known ghost sharks, giving scientists the confidence to declare it a brand new species.
