New Heart Pill Approved for 6,600 UK Patients

Around 6,600 people in England with a serious heart condition can now access a breakthrough treatment that could transform their daily lives.

Aficamten, a once-daily pill, has just been approved for patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This condition causes the heart muscle to thicken and stiffen, making it harder to pump blood. People with HCM often struggle with exhaustion, dizziness, breathlessness, chest pain, and irregular heartbeats that make everyday activities feel impossible.

The condition affects roughly 1 in 500 people in the UK, and about half of cases run in families. For many patients, simple tasks like climbing stairs or playing with their kids become overwhelming challenges.

Clinical trials show aficamten helps people exercise more easily and reduces their debilitating symptoms. The new drug appears to work just as well as the only other approved treatment of its kind, mavacamten, but may require fewer monitoring scans to find the right dose.

The medication works by binding to a protein called myosin in heart muscle cells. This reduces excessive contractions, helps the heart pump more smoothly, and improves blood flow throughout the body.

The NHS will make aficamten available within 30 days, at a reduced cost thanks to a confidential discount negotiated with the manufacturer.
