New Hydropower Line Brings Canadian Clean Energy to New England

A massive transmission line is now delivering clean hydropower from Canada straight into New England homes, marking a hard-won victory for renewable energy after years of controversy.

The New England Clean Energy Connect started operations in January, carrying electricity 192 miles from Quebec into Maine. After facing public opposition, a statewide referendum pause, and legal battles that delayed the project until 2023, the line finally came online this year.

Massachusetts contracted for enough hydropower to meet roughly 20 percent of the state's annual electricity needs. That's a meaningful chunk of clean energy flowing into a region that has historically relied heavily on natural gas.

The first few months have included some technical hiccups, which energy experts say is normal for new infrastructure. The line experienced several outages, including a two-week pause in late May for repairs, but Hydro-Québec reports that deliveries have since resumed and the system is being optimized.

Through April, the transmission line delivered about 2.4 terawatt-hours of renewable power to New England. That's enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes with clean energy instead of fossil fuels.

The Bright Side

While some analysts note that total hydropower imports aren't yet hitting expected levels due to drought conditions in Quebec, the infrastructure itself represents real progress. Getting any major clean energy project completed in today's political climate is an achievement worth celebrating.

The project survived fierce opposition, regulatory hurdles, and years of delays to become operational. Now it provides a direct pathway for renewable energy to reach millions of people who previously had fewer clean power options.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has highlighted the line's potential to help residents save money on utility bills while advancing the state's renewable energy goals. As the system continues to optimize and Quebec's water levels recover, the flow of clean energy should increase.

The successful launch proves that ambitious clean energy infrastructure can overcome opposition and deliver results, setting a positive example for similar projects across the country.
