Six Massachusetts Students Earn National Merit Honors

Six seniors at Manchester Essex Regional High School in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, are celebrating after earning national recognition for their academic excellence.

Five students—Charlie Athanas, Catherine Vendt, Alexander Hatfield, Peter Langendorf, and Dodge Roberts—earned commended student status in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. Their classmate Tyler Cummins achieved even higher honors as a semifinalist, placing him among just 16,000 students nationwide from over 1.2 million who entered the competition.

The recognition comes from their performance on the 2025 Preliminary SAT. Commended students rank among the top 50,000 scorers in the country, while Cummins represents less than 1% of America's high school seniors.

For a small regional high school to have six students reach this level is remarkable. Principal Julie Sgroi presented each student with a letter of commendation during a special recognition ceremony.

Cummins now moves forward in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarship Awards. He'll submit a detailed application covering his academic record, leadership activities, community involvement, and achievements. Winners will be announced starting in April 2027.

The Ripple Effect

This achievement reflects more than individual student success. When six students from one small school earn national recognition, it shows what dedicated teachers, supportive communities, and motivated peers can accomplish together.

The commended students scored high enough to be celebrated among 34,000 academic achievers nationwide. For their families, teachers, and Manchester-by-the-Sea community, it's proof that excellence can flourish anywhere with the right support.

Principal Sgroi praised not just the six honorees but also the entire school community. "This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment to excellence of both these students and our entire staff and student body," she said.

These students now join an elite network of National Merit scholars who often go on to attend top universities and pursue impactful careers. The scholarship opportunities could open doors that change their educational trajectories forever.

For now, six Manchester Essex families have good reason to celebrate their students' dedication paying off in the most concrete way possible.
