New Insurance Cuts Costs for Reforestation Carbon Projects
A groundbreaking insurance framework just made it cheaper for tree-planting projects to sell carbon credits, putting more money toward actually restoring forests. Five insurers are already approved to help reforestation developers keep more revenue while still protecting buyers.
Tree-planting companies fighting climate change just got a financial boost that could help them grow more forests faster.
Isometric, a carbon certification company, launched an insurance framework with global broker Marsh on October 20 that lets reforestation project developers spend less on backup reserves. This means they can keep more money from selling carbon credits during crucial early years when costs run highest.
Here's how it works. When companies sell carbon removal certificates from reforestation projects, they normally must set aside a chunk in "buffer pools." These reserves act like safety nets, protecting buyers if wildfires, disease, or other disasters destroy the stored carbon later.
The new insurance option allows developers to replace part of those buffer pool contributions with actual insurance coverage. Instead of locking away certificates they could sell, they can now purchase policies from approved insurers and keep more revenue flowing.
Five insurance providers have already signed on: Artio, CarbonPool, CFC, Kita, and Oka. More insurers can apply for approval to join the framework.

Lukas May, Isometric's Chief Commercial Officer, says developers now have greater financial flexibility without sacrificing protection against carbon loss. Bruno Figueiredo from reforestation developer Mombak believes the insurance approach gives buyers stronger guarantees while helping developers manage risks more efficiently.
The Ripple Effect
This innovation addresses one of the biggest challenges in reforestation finance. Early project years demand heavy investment in land, seedlings, labor, and monitoring, yet revenues trickle in slowly as trees grow. By freeing up more certificates to sell upfront, the insurance framework could attract more investment into forest restoration.
The timing matters. As companies worldwide seek credible carbon removal solutions to meet climate goals, making reforestation projects more financially viable helps scale up nature-based climate action. More profitable early years mean more developers can afford to launch ambitious restoration projects.
Hema Mistry, CEO of FINPRO UK at Marsh Risk, notes the framework creates clear requirements for integrating insurance with existing buffer mechanisms. Marsh views carbon insurance as essential infrastructure for managing risks across carbon markets, potentially unlocking more project financing.
Isometric is already exploring whether this insurance model could expand beyond trees to other carbon removal methods, suggesting today's announcement might be just the beginning of making climate solutions more economically sustainable.
The framework proves that smart financial tools can remove barriers to climate action while maintaining environmental integrity.
