New Jersey Families Build Community at UPFNA Picnic

More than 200 families from across New Jersey and neighboring states came together on August 1st to celebrate culture, connection, and community at the Uttar Pradesh Federation of North America's annual picnic.

The event kicked off with something unexpected: a family introduction session where each household shared their hometown in India, their journey with UPFNA, and ideas for strengthening the community. These personal stories helped members move beyond small talk and forge genuine friendships rooted in shared experiences.

The celebration brought authentic tastes of India to New Jersey through live cooking demonstrations. Families watched as volunteers prepared fresh pani puri, the tangy street snack beloved across India, alongside crispy jalebis that filled the air with the smell of sweet syrup.

After the cooking experience, everyone gathered for a community lunch that turned into hours of conversation and laughter. The simple act of sharing a meal together created space for connections across generations and backgrounds.

Games and activities kept the energy high throughout the afternoon. Children played alongside grandparents while teens and adults joined in, creating moments of teamwork and friendly competition that brought out everyone's playful side.

The day wrapped up with a custom version of Tambola, similar to bingo, designed specifically for the event. The game featured references to Uttar Pradesh landmarks and inside jokes from the day, turning a familiar activity into a personalized celebration of their community.

Young volunteers played a crucial role in making the event run smoothly. They handled registrations, coordinated games, and supported activities throughout the day, showing the leadership skills that will carry UPFNA into the future.
