New Jersey Schools Get Solar Grants to Cut Energy Costs

Schools across New Jersey could soon redirect money from power bills straight into classrooms thanks to a new solar energy grant program moving through the state legislature.

The Senate Environment and Energy Committee advanced legislation that would help school districts, public schools, and community colleges install solar panels with grants covering up to 50 percent of project costs. The program would be managed by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and requires no matching funds from schools.

Senator Troy Singleton, who sponsors the bill, pointed to the strain energy costs put on education budgets. "Energy costs place a significant burden on school budgets that should be focused on educating our students," he said.

The program addresses a real problem. Many school districts want to go solar but lack the upfront capital to make it happen, even though the long-term savings are substantial.

Under the proposed legislation, schools wouldn't need to come up with matching funds, removing a major barrier. The BPU would also provide technical support and help schools tap into federal Inflation Reduction Act funding opportunities.

To protect taxpayer investment, the bill includes safeguards. If a facility receiving grant money is sold or transferred, the grant must be partially repaid on a sliding scale. The repayment ranges from 80 percent if sold within five years to just 20 percent if the transfer happens between 15 and 20 years later.

Schools would also get educational materials on how to finance, install, and maintain their solar systems. The BPU would monitor compliance and require recipients to report how they used the funds.

This initiative builds on New Jersey's solar momentum. The state already has more than 245,000 solar projects installed or in development as of late 2025, making it a national leader in solar energy.

When schools go solar, the benefits multiply beyond individual buildings. Lower energy costs mean more money for teachers, supplies, and programs that directly serve students. Communities see their tax dollars work harder while reducing carbon emissions.
