New Jersey Town Cuts Energy Bills 45% With Solar Program

Paying high electricity bills while wanting to go green just got easier for thousands of New Jersey families. The Borough of Middlesex just launched a community solar program that cuts participating households' energy costs by 45 percent with no installation required.

Here's how it works: residents sign up through Solar Simplified and get connected to a local solar farm instead of putting panels on their roof. Credits from the solar energy show up directly on their regular utility bill. No equipment to buy, no switching providers, and no long-term contract locking them in.

Renters can participate too, which solves a huge barrier to clean energy access. For the first time, apartment dwellers and those who can't afford rooftop solar installations can benefit from renewable power the same way homeowners do.

Middlesex joins Edgewater Park as the second New Jersey town to partner with Solar Simplified, where hundreds of residents have already enrolled. Projects start generating electricity this quarter, meaning families who sign up now will see maximum savings during the energy-hungry summer months when air conditioners run overtime.

Clare Levourne, Chair of Middlesex's Environmental Commission, says the program tackles two problems at once. "Community solar is a win for our residents and our environment," she explained. "We're helping households reduce energy costs while investing in a cleaner, more resilient energy future."

The program prioritizes families who need help most. At least 51 percent of available solar capacity goes to low and moderate-income households first. Solar Simplified works with senior centers, housing authorities, and community groups to reach people who stand to benefit most from lower bills.
