A lone bear cub stranded in a roadside ditch on Interstate 78 got a second chance thanks to quick-thinking New Jersey State Police. The tiny animal is now safe and receiving proper care from wildlife officials.
When New Jersey State Police received reports of a young bear cub alone in a highway ditch Wednesday afternoon, they knew every minute mattered.
Troopers from the Perryville Station responded to Interstate 78 East in Union Township around 1:37 p.m. and found the small cub by itself, vulnerable and in need of immediate help. Without hesitation, they safely secured the frightened animal and transported it back to their station for temporary care.

The officers provided comfort until the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection arrived to take over. The cub is now receiving specialized attention from wildlife experts trained to help orphaned or injured animals.
