New Light Therapy Eliminates HPV in Cancer Study

A team of Mexican scientists has achieved something remarkable in the fight against cervical cancer: they've eliminated HPV, the virus responsible for most cases, in a group of patients using an innovative light therapy.

Eva Ramón Gallegos and her research team at Mexico's National Polytechnic Institute tested a technique called photodynamic therapy on 29 women diagnosed with HPV. The results were striking: every patient who had HPV without cervical lesions saw the virus completely eliminated.

The treatment works through an elegant process. Doctors apply a light-sensitive compound called aminolevulinic acid directly to infected cervical tissue, making the infected cells vulnerable to light. When they expose the area to a controlled laser, the activated substance destroys infected cells while leaving healthy tissue intact.

For patients who already had precancerous lesions along with HPV, about 64 percent saw the virus eliminated. This represents a significant breakthrough, since treatment options for people already infected with HPV have been extremely limited until now.

HPV is one of the most common viral infections on the planet. While vaccines like Gardasil can prevent several high-risk strains, they don't help people who are already infected. This new therapy could fill that critical gap.

Dr. Theoneste Maniragaba, Director of the Cancer Programme at Rwanda Biomedical Centre, sees promise in the approach. He explained that if the treatment meets World Health Organization standards in larger trials, it could become the most effective option available.
