New Robot Makes Colonoscopy Easier and More Accurate

Getting a colonoscopy could soon become easier for patients and doctors alike, thanks to a newly approved robotic system designed to catch cancer before it starts.

Neptune Medical received FDA clearance this week for its Triton 1 System, a robotic assistant that helps doctors navigate the entire colon with greater precision and stability. The Burlingame, California company built the technology to address a critical gap in cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer death in America, and rates are climbing among adults under 50. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard because it's the only procedure that can detect and remove precancerous growths in a single session.

But traditional endoscopes come with serious limitations. Despite years of specialized training, gastroenterologists struggle with equipment that's inherently difficult to control. That instability can lead to missed lesions and, ultimately, undetected cancer.

Triton changes the equation. In its first human trial, the system achieved 100% success in reaching the cecum (the beginning of the colon) with zero adverse events. Even more impressive, it detected precancerous adenomas at a 54.2% rate, far exceeding the industry standard of 35%.

The robot also made the procedure less physically demanding for doctors. Physicians reported a 67% lower workload compared to manual colonoscopy, with no need for patient repositioning or abdominal pressure during the exam.

"Triton has the potential to fundamentally transform colonoscopy, creating a better experience for both physicians and their patients," said Alex Tilson, Neptune Medical's founder and CEO. The company plans to use feedback from endoscopists to refine the next generation platform.

Better colonoscopy technology means more lives saved through early detection. When doctors can see the entire colon clearly and remove precancerous growths in one procedure, fewer people develop life threatening cancer. The improved ergonomics also mean physicians can perform more thorough exams without physical strain, potentially increasing screening capacity when it's needed most.

Dr. Jason Samarasena, who participated in the clinical trial at UC Irvine, sees the bigger picture. "Triton showed us the possibility of one system that can screen and treat anywhere in the colon, efficiently, thoroughly, and with minimal burden."

As Neptune Medical moves toward commercialization, this technology represents a genuine leap forward in preventing one of America's deadliest cancers.
