New Sea Urchin Species Found 2 Miles Deep Off Argentina

Scientists just found a new species of sea urchin living nearly two miles beneath the surface of the Argentine Sea, where few creatures can survive.

The tiny urchin, named Bathycidaris argentina, was discovered between 1,100 and 1,950 meters deep in the Mar del Plata submarine canyon. Researchers from CONICET and the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences identified not just a new species, but an entirely new genus.

The canyon itself stretches 250 kilometers offshore and plunges nearly 4,000 meters deep. Total darkness, near-freezing temperatures, and crushing pressure make it one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

Despite measuring just two centimeters wide, this tiny urchin shows remarkable adaptations. Female urchins protect their embryos near their mouths until the young can survive on their own, an unusual parental behavior for their family.

The urchin's spines serve as tiny apartment buildings for other deep-sea creatures. Worms and marine colonies attach themselves to the spines, creating miniature ecosystems around each individual urchin.

Scientists collected samples during multiple expeditions aboard the Puerto Deseado research vessel over more than a decade. They combined traditional measurements with genetic testing to confirm they'd found something entirely new to science.
