Electric vehicles are about to get a major upgrade that works better in freezing weather and costs less to make. The world's largest battery maker just announced its breakthrough sodium-ion batteries will power passenger cars starting next year.
CATL, the world's leading EV battery manufacturer, will launch its first sodium-ion batteries in passenger vehicles by spring 2026, marking a major leap from lab experiments to real-world driving.
The Chinese battery giant confirmed that GAC Aion will be the first automaker to offer a passenger car with the new technology. CATL's chief technology officer, Gao Huan, made the announcement after unveiling the company's Tectrans II sodium-ion batteries for commercial vehicles last week.
These new batteries solve one of electric vehicles' biggest problems: cold weather performance. While traditional lithium-ion batteries struggle in winter, CATL's sodium-ion batteries charged successfully at minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit and retained 90% of their power at minus 40 degrees.
The technology uses sodium instead of lithium, which means cheaper materials and lower costs for drivers. Plus, the batteries don't need extra cooling systems, making them simpler and more affordable to build.

CATL already completed winter testing in light trucks and mid-size vans, where the 45 kWh battery packs performed better than expected. The company plans to start mass production in July 2025, then expand beyond passenger cars into construction equipment and energy storage.
Right now, sodium-ion batteries store less energy than lithium batteries in the same space. But CATL is working fast to close that gap, aiming to match the performance of lithium iron phosphate batteries within three years.
The Ripple Effect
This breakthrough could reshape the entire EV industry. Sodium is abundant and inexpensive compared to lithium, which has faced price spikes and supply chain problems. As production scales up, more automakers will likely adopt the technology, making electric vehicles more affordable and practical for millions of drivers who live in cold climates.
CATL has been developing sodium battery technology since 2021 and is already working on its third generation. The company's latest version, branded as Naxtra, achieves energy density comparable to high-end lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The shift from lab to assembly line represents years of research paying off in a way that benefits everyday drivers. Cheaper batteries that work reliably in winter could be the push electric vehicles need to win over skeptical buyers in northern regions.
