This matters especially for cities, where chimneys, trees, and neighboring buildings create patchy shadows throughout the day. Urban rooftops have been trickier for solar, but this technology makes them far more viable.

The team is already looking ahead. They're testing how the same approach could improve next-generation perovskite-silicon panels, potentially eliminating the need for additional expensive converters.

The research, published in Solar Energy, used realistic year-long simulations with 25-panel systems facing the challenging southwest direction. Every configuration included surrounding objects that created partial shading, mimicking what real homeowners face.

For anyone who's been told their roof isn't ideal for solar because of shade, this could change the equation entirely.
