Coltura, a nonprofit focused on clean transportation, launched the EV Cost Savings Index to help people see exactly how much money they'd keep by ditching gas pumps. Co-executive director Janelle London explains that the timing matters. With gas prices jumping during global events, the difference between filling up at the pump versus charging at home has grown dramatically.

The tool is refreshingly simple. Drivers enter their vehicle type (car, truck, or SUV) and annual miles driven, then instantly see their potential fuel and maintenance savings combined.

For someone driving 25,000 miles yearly in Pennsylvania, that adds up to $3,378 saved annually. Even moderate drivers see real benefits, with the current average savings hitting 13.5 cents per mile compared to eight cents before recent gas price spikes.

The calculator works by comparing your state's average electricity rate (which changes slowly and predictably) against volatile gas prices. In Pennsylvania, the residential utility rate has held steady at 20 cents per kilowatt hour for months while gas prices have fluctuated wildly.

The math is straightforward: the more you drive, the more you save. A 100-mile trip in Pennsylvania currently saves drivers $24.02 in an EV versus a gas vehicle.
