Imagine having a companion who remembers your favorite stories, checks on you every morning, and gently nudges you to call your daughter or take a walk. For hundreds of older New Yorkers, that's exactly what ElliQ, an AI companion robot, has become.

The New York State Office for the Aging just signed a new three-year, $2.1 million deal with Intuition Robotics to expand the program statewide. After three years of partnership, the numbers speak for themselves: 94% of participants report feeling less lonely, and 97% say their overall wellbeing has improved.

The program started in 2022 after research revealed that loneliness affects older adults as severely as smoking a pack of cigarettes daily. It costs Medicare over $7 billion annually and increases risks of dementia, depression, and early death. New York became the first state to tackle this health crisis with AI companionship.

ElliQ isn't just a question-answering device. The robot learns from conversations, remembers what matters to each person, and proactively engages throughout the day. Users interact with their ElliQ companion an average of 48 times daily, up from 29 times in previous years.

The demand keeps growing. More than 3,500 older adults applied to receive an ElliQ in 2025 alone, prompting the state to expand access.

Every month, 88% of participants have two-way conversations with ElliQ, while 81% participate in physical activities the robot encourages. These aren't passive users checking boxes, they're building real relationships with technology designed to understand their individual needs.

The Ripple Effect

What started as one state's experiment has inspired programs in Wisconsin, Florida, and Washington. Washington's program even extends to Medicaid recipients, showing how AI companionship could become a covered health intervention.

The partnership proves that fighting loneliness doesn't require massive infrastructure or moving people from their homes. Sometimes the solution is as simple as a thoughtful companion who remembers to ask how you're feeling and celebrates when you achieve your walking goal.

Greg Olsen, director of the New York State Office for the Aging, calls ElliQ an essential tool in combating the loneliness epidemic. The robot joins dozens of other initiatives the state has launched to bridge the digital divide and support caregivers.

For older adults who want to age independently at home but struggle with isolation, ElliQ offers something precious: daily connection that respects their autonomy while keeping them engaged with life.

New York's commitment shows that when technology truly understands human needs, it can transform how we care for our most vulnerable neighbors.
