New Zealand Finds Homes for 1,400 Retired Greyhounds

New Zealand is launching one of the world's largest greyhound rehoming efforts as the country transitions away from racing.

The Greyhound Transition Agency is coordinating permanent homes for approximately 1,400 retired racing dogs following the ban that took effect Saturday. Each rehomed dog will receive regular welfare checks under a new monitoring program.

Heather Simpson, who leads the transition agency, confirmed the rehoming effort is already underway. The program represents a significant commitment to ensuring these animals find safe, loving homes rather than uncertain futures.

For trainers who want to continue in the sport, charter flights are transporting about 150 greyhounds to Australia, where racing remains legal in most regions. These dogs, many partly owned by Australians, will enter the country as companion animals.

The Australian Department of Agriculture has processed similar imports before. Officials confirmed about 80 greyhounds arrived through the same process in April 2025 under standard companion animal conditions.
