Healthy green kiwifruit vines growing in New Zealand orchard with golden sunlight filtering through leaves

😊 Feel Good

New Zealand's kiwifruit industry is celebrating another record harvest despite early cyclone fears, with growers embracing ecosystem-based farming that's creating healthier, more resilient orchards. The shift toward holistic growing practices is helping the nation produce what experts call "the world's healthiest fruit."

New Zealand kiwifruit growers just dodged a bullet and broke a record at the same time.

This season's harvest is tracking toward 228 million trays, surpassing last year's already record-breaking 216 million. The success comes after Cyclone Vaianu threatened to devastate orchards across the country, but lost steam before making landfall.

"It was looking like it was going to be quite bad. We were all fearful that it was going to be another Cyclone Gabrielle," says Cam Clayton, kiwifruit expert at DMS Progrowers. Instead, damage was limited to some orchards in just one region.

The near-miss has reinforced an important lesson growers have been learning. Weather events are becoming more unpredictable, but the solution isn't just hoping for the best.

Clayton points to a fundamental shift happening in New Zealand's orchards. Growers are moving away from treating vines as isolated production units and instead nurturing entire orchard ecosystems.

"When we stop focusing on vines and their inputs and outputs, and we consider the vines in the context of being part of an orchard ecosystem, we end up being much smarter about what inputs we use," Clayton explains. The approach means feeding not just the vines, but the whole living system around them.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits of this ecosystem thinking extend far beyond weather resilience. Healthier soil and balanced orchard environments are producing fruit that's not just more robust, but also tastier and more nutrient-dense.

This holistic approach is helping New Zealand maintain its reputation for premium fruit even as volumes increase dramatically. The growth is largely driven by SunGold kiwifruit production, which continues to see strong global demand.

Returns are holding steady too, with Ruby Red prices forecast to increase and SunGold and green varieties maintaining last year's levels. That stability matters as input costs keep rising across the agricultural sector.

The industry's single-desk export model through Zespri continues to provide clear routes to global markets. "Demand's strong. Zespri does a fantastic job in the marketplace," Clayton notes.

Beyond weather, biosecurity remains a constant challenge. The industry faced four pest-related events this season, but Kiwifruit Vine Health worked closely with government agencies to eliminate three of the four threats.

The combination of ecosystem-focused growing, strong export management, and effective biosecurity response is creating a more sustainable model for one of New Zealand's signature agricultural industries. Resilience is becoming just as important as yield in measuring success.
