New Zealand Sees 8% Jump in Graduates Finishing Degrees

New Zealand just hit a major milestone in education, with 8% more students completing their tertiary qualifications in 2025 compared to the year before.

The growth spans universities, technical institutes, and private training providers across the country. Domestic students led the charge with 123,200 completions, marking a 5.9% increase that shows more Kiwis are sticking with their studies and crossing the finish line.

International students recorded an even more impressive jump. Completions surged 22% to reach 21,230, proving that students worldwide still see New Zealand as a top destination for quality education. The numbers reflect both the country's strong reputation and its welcoming approach to learners from overseas.

The wins extend beyond simple completion numbers. About 72% of students who started a bachelor's degree either finished it or moved up to an even higher qualification within eight years. Women and full-time students showed particularly strong completion rates, while Māori and Pacific students posted encouraging improvements in their degree completion numbers.

Private training centers saw the strongest growth among all education providers. Their domestic completions jumped 12%, with Level 1 certificates up 14% and graduate diplomas rising 13%. Younger learners under 20 contributed significantly to the positive trend, with their completions increasing 10%.
