Newlywed Recovering After Roadside Rescue Goes Wrong

Zach Alfi was just trying to help when he pulled over on Route 24 in Freetown, Massachusetts, on February 20th to check on a driver who had spun out on the shoulder. That instinct to help a stranger nearly cost him his life.

As Zach walked back to his car after confirming the driver was okay, a third vehicle lost control and struck him. His wife Molly, who married Zach just five months earlier, knew something was wrong when he didn't answer her calls that night.

"I saw he was on the side of 24, and he wasn't moving," Molly recalled. She had felt an inexplicable urgency to reach him just moments before the crash.

Zach was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, where he spent days in the ICU in a medically induced coma. He sustained multiple broken bones and faces several surgeries, but he's now awake and talking with his family.

"It's really a miracle that he's here," Molly said. "He was just trying to help someone."

"To him it was just something he did out of instinct," Molly explained. "Now everyone else is doing such kind things out of instinct. It's really heartwarming."

The East Providence couple has known each other since 2019, and Molly describes Zach as "one of the best people I know." His compassion on that February night has sparked a chain reaction of generosity that proves good people inspire good actions.

Zach faces a long recovery ahead, but he's alive and surrounded by love from a community that refuses to let a good Samaritan face his hardest moment alone.
