Newton County Schools Named District of Innovation

First graders in Newton County, Mississippi are already practicing job interviews, and that early start just helped their school district earn a prestigious new title.

The Newton County School District has been named a District of Innovation for the 2025 school year. It's the second major recognition this year after receiving an A+ district rating in March.

Superintendent Brooke Sibley calls the designation both an honor and an opportunity. "This will provide opportunities for our students to experience new things and allow us to be flexible in how we serve our students and our community," she said.

The district's approach starts surprisingly early. Students begin mock job interviews in first grade, building skills they'll use for years to come.

Even pre-K students learn about community involvement and local happenings. "It is truly a district-wide initiative," Sibley explained.

The Ripple Effect

Chinelo Graves, director of innovation for the Mississippi Department of Education, sees this designation creating waves far beyond the classroom. Building stronger students means building stronger communities through better prepared employees and employers.

"The opportunities will be limitless," Graves said. She believes this approach strengthens not just individual students but the entire fabric of the community they'll serve.

Newton County now joins other regional districts recognized for innovative education approaches. The designation gives them more freedom to design programs that match what their students and community actually need.

This recognition rewards years of work preparing young people for success beyond graduation, starting from their very first day of school.
