NFL Star's Final Act: Feeding the Homeless in San Jose

Hours before his death at age 36, former San Francisco 49ers star Aldon Smith made a surprise trip to help people experiencing homelessness.

Smith showed up unexpectedly at CHAM Deliverance Ministry in San Jose, California, with 10 pizzas for the charity's homeless outreach program. His friend Amir Shirazi accompanied him on what would become his final charitable act.

"He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant," Shirazi told the San Francisco Chronicle. "If you really knew him, you'd know who he truly is."

Scott Wagers, who co-founded CHAM Deliverance Ministry, expressed gratitude for the gesture. "My impression was that this is a young man that wanted to help the homeless, which was great," he said. "When people like that want to help the community, that's everything."

Smith's NFL career was remarkable despite being cut short by personal struggles. Drafted seventh overall in 2011, he exploded onto the scene with 14 sacks as a rookie and set a 49ers franchise record with 19.5 sacks the following year.

He became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 30 career sacks, doing so in just 27 games. That broke a record previously held by Hall of Famer Reggie White.

After years battling substance abuse and legal troubles that kept him suspended from the league, Smith made an inspiring comeback in 2020. He played all 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys, proving he still had what it took to compete at the highest level.
