NH Launches $1M Grant to Expand EV Charging Network
New Hampshire is investing $1 million to bring electric vehicle charging stations to tourist destinations across the state, fixing a gap that's been costing local communities tourism dollars. The grant program will cover up to 80% of installation costs, spreading charging infrastructure to every corner of the Granite State.
New Hampshire just made it easier for electric vehicle drivers to explore the White Mountains, Lakes Region, and every corner of the state.
The state announced a $1 million grant program Tuesday to install EV charging stations at tourism hotspots, addressing a critical gap that has left New Hampshire trailing its New England neighbors. With only 597 charging ports, the state currently has just 5% of the region's total charging infrastructure.
That shortage has real consequences. A February 2025 report found the lack of chargers was costing New Hampshire millions in lost tourism revenue as EV drivers chose other destinations where they could charge with confidence.
The new "Recharge the Adventure New Hampshire Grant Program" will cover up to 80% of costs to install Level 2 charging stations, with a maximum of $10,000 per charging port. Public agencies, private businesses, and nonprofit organizations can all apply for funding.
The program includes smart safeguards to ensure the benefits reach communities statewide. Each grant is capped at $100,000 per municipality, and every one of New Hampshire's nine regional planning zones is guaranteed at least $40,000 in funding.

Business and Economic Affairs Commissioner Lucy Lange emphasized the economic opportunity. Installing chargers at travel destinations will support local economies while giving both residents and visitors confidence to explore more of what the state offers.
The funding comes from settlement money New Hampshire received from a Clean Air Act lawsuit against Volkswagen. A similar program in 2021 already funded $4 million in EV charging projects on government property.
The Ripple Effect
This investment does more than help EV drivers find a charge. It positions New Hampshire businesses to capture tourism dollars that have been driving past to neighboring states with better charging networks.
Local restaurants, hotels, shops, and attractions near new charging stations stand to benefit as EV drivers spend time and money while their vehicles charge. A 30-minute charge becomes a meal at a local restaurant or a visit to a nearby shop.
Environmental Services Commissioner Robert Scott noted the dual benefit: supporting both the state's economy and cleaner air quality as more drivers make the switch to electric vehicles.
The program represents exactly the kind of forward-thinking infrastructure investment that helps rural and tourism-dependent communities compete in a changing economy.
New Hampshire is betting that a million-dollar investment today will pay dividends in tourism revenue, cleaner air, and thriving local businesses for years to come.
