Niger Pays $7M in Gratuities After 10-Year Wait

After waiting more than 10 years, retired government workers in Niger State, Nigeria are finally receiving the gratuities they earned through decades of public service.

The Niger State Pension Board has begun distributing payments to state and local government retirees as part of a major effort to clear a massive backlog of unpaid benefits. So far, the government has released about ₦7 billion (approximately $7 million USD) to settle outstanding obligations.

Some beneficiaries retired over a decade ago without receiving a single payment. When Governor Mohammed Bago took office, he inherited years of accumulated debt to retirees who had served their communities faithfully but were left waiting for the benefits they were promised.

The current administration has been releasing funds in batches to address the crisis. Eligible beneficiaries in this round are receiving 100 percent of their approved gratuity, paid through checks they can deposit immediately.

For Tukura Kwaliki, one of the beneficiaries, the moment was profound. "This is not just money to me. It is the reward for many years of service and sacrifice," he said. "After waiting so long, receiving this gratuity has brought relief to my family and me."

The payments also extend to families of deceased workers. Zainab Suleiman collected a death benefit on behalf of her family after losing a loved one. "Losing a loved one is painful enough, and waiting for an entitlement after that loss makes it even harder," she shared. "Today, we have received some relief."

The payment process requires careful verification to ensure accuracy and prevent fraud. Director-General Nasiru Namaska explained that the Pension Board retrieves, sorts, and verifies each beneficiary's files and records before processing payments.

Retirees whose names haven't appeared in the current batch are being assured their cases will be reviewed. The board is working systematically through the backlog to reach everyone owed benefits.

This progress represents more than financial relief for individual retirees. When elderly workers finally receive their earned benefits, entire families gain stability and security.

The payments allow retirees to access medical care, support grandchildren's education, and live with dignity after years of public service. For families who lost breadwinners, death benefits provide crucial support during difficult transitions.
