Nigeria and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Hajj Partnership

For the first time ever, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Hajj and Umrah has visited Nigeria, marking a breakthrough moment in religious cooperation between the two nations.

Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah led a high-level delegation to Abuja this week to meet with Nigerian officials, including National Hajj Commission Chairman Professor Abdullahi Usman. The historic talks focused on improving services for the millions of Nigerians who travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages each year.

The numbers tell an impressive story. In 2025 alone, Saudi Arabia welcomed approximately 89,000 Nigerian Umrah pilgrims, with 420 flights departing from Jeddah to support these spiritual journeys. That's 92 percent of Nigerian travelers arriving on proper Umrah visas.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar called the visit "history in the making" during the meeting. He delivered greetings from President Bola Tinubu to Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, emphasizing Nigeria's commitment to strengthening the partnership.

Professor Usman praised Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reforms, which have transformed infrastructure, safety, and services for pilgrims worldwide. He acknowledged challenges with some pilgrims overstaying their visas and pledged Nigeria's commitment to addressing the issue through better regulation and community engagement.

The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond visa processing. This partnership touches the lives of millions of Nigerian Muslims who dream of visiting Mecca and Medina. Better cooperation means safer journeys, smoother logistics, and more opportunities for Nigerians to fulfill their religious obligations.

Dr. Al-Rabiah expressed the Kingdom's eagerness to deepen institutional cooperation with Nigeria. "The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah places great importance on strengthening cooperation with our brothers in Nigeria to ensure a smooth and safe experience for Nigerian pilgrims," he said.

Minister Tuggar highlighted Nigeria's centuries-old connection to the Holy Land, including historic trans-Saharan pilgrimage routes. He emphasized the need for future discussions on expanding Nigeria's pilgrim quota as the country's population continues to grow.

This meeting strengthens one of the most important pillars of Nigeria-Saudi relations, rooted in shared faith, mutual respect, and deep people-to-people ties that span generations.
