Nigeria Anti-Fraud Agency Returns $80K to Scam Victim

When Akinsewa Akiode discovered the land he'd just bought for 125 million naira was tied up in lawsuits, he thought his money was gone forever. Last Thursday in Lagos, Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved him wrong by handing back every cent.

Akiode had paid the hefty sum for a 550-square-meter plot on Kudirat Abiola Way in the Oregun neighborhood. But seller Olufemi Fashehun allegedly never mentioned one critical detail: courts had been fighting over the property since 2011.

The EFCC investigation found that Fashehun had received multiple court orders, including injunctions that banned any construction on the land. He completed the sale anyway without disclosing the legal mess.

Akiode didn't just lose his investment. He also lost the structures he'd already started building on what he thought was his property. That's when he turned to the anti-corruption agency for help.

After wrapping up their investigation, EFCC agents recovered the full 125 million naira from the suspect. On Thursday, they presented the money to Akiode through Sterling Bank drafts at a ceremony in Ikoyi.

The Ripple Effect

This marks the latest in a growing pattern of victims actually getting their money back. Just two weeks earlier, the EFCC returned 108 million naira to victims of another fraud case. In October, they handed over three houses, two vehicles, and 1.1 million naira to a scam victim in Ibadan after a court ordered the assets forfeited.

Acting Zonal Director Bawa Kaltungo said the commission remains committed to investigating financial crimes and ensuring victims receive restitution whenever possible. The agency hasn't announced whether criminal charges will be filed against Fashehun.
