Nigeria Approves $2.7B Highway to Transform Northeast Region

A highway built in 1962 is getting a complete makeover that could transform economic opportunities for millions of people in northeastern Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved N1.245 trillion (approximately $2.7 billion) to modernize the Gombe-Biu Highway, turning the aging single-lane road into a modern dual carriageway. The 139-kilometer route connects Gombe and Borno states, two major economic centers in Nigeria's Northeast region.

Former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai praised the decision, calling it one of the most significant infrastructure investments the region has seen in decades. He noted that communities along the corridor have struggled with poor road conditions that slowed commerce and made travel difficult.

The project will use rigid pavement technology designed to withstand heavy traffic and harsh weather conditions. Construction is expected to create thousands of jobs for local workers and contractors throughout the multi-year building phase.

The highway upgrade reaches far beyond smoother commutes. Better roads mean farmers can get their crops to market faster, reducing spoilage and increasing profits. Small businesses will gain easier access to suppliers and customers in neighboring cities.

Works Minister Senator David Umahi emphasized that the project reflects the government's commitment to connecting underserved regions and spreading economic opportunity beyond major coastal cities.
