Nigeria College Graduates 5,922 Health Workers After 8 Years

Nearly 6,000 health science graduates finally got to celebrate the moment they'd been waiting years for.

Delta State College of Health Sciences and Technology in Ofuoma-Ughelli, Nigeria, held its 8th convocation ceremony on Saturday, marking the first graduation event in years. The celebration honored 5,922 students who completed their programs between 2017 and 2025, many of whom had been working in healthcare for years without formally receiving their certificates.

"This convocation represents closure, restoration and the fulfillment of a long-awaited academic right," said Dr. Odiete Eravweroso, the college's provost. The ceremony brought together families, traditional leaders, and government officials who filled the campus with an atmosphere of celebration.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori challenged the new graduates to serve with both skill and compassion. "Contribute meaningfully to society through professionalism and compassion," he urged, while also encouraging them to pursue advanced training.

The timing couldn't be better. Nigeria faces a critical shortage of qualified healthcare workers, particularly in rural areas where access to medical care remains limited.

Dr. Odiete reminded graduates that their credentials are just the beginning. "While certificates qualify you to practice, character will ultimately determine your impact," she told the crowd. "You are graduating at a time when Nigeria needs competent, ethical and compassionate health professionals more than ever."

These 5,922 graduates represent far more than individual success stories. Each nurse, lab technician, and health professional will touch thousands of lives throughout their careers, bringing medical expertise to communities across Delta State and beyond.

The college's governing council chairman, Dr. Chris Oharisi, emphasized the sacred trust these graduates now carry. "As graduates of this institution, you are stepping into a world that urgently needs your competence, integrity and humanity," he said.

The institution is also looking forward. Dr. Odiete promised her administration would strengthen standards, improve facilities, and develop staff to position the college as a center of excellence. She expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government for its continued support of education and workforce development.

Parents who attended the ceremony had waited alongside their children for years to see this day arrive. The provost thanked them for their patience and partnership, acknowledging that delays in holding the ceremony had tested everyone's faith in the process.
