Nigeria: Free CNG Buses Save Commuters $3.5B in One Year

Commuters in Kaduna State, Nigeria have pocketed more than $3.5 billion in savings thanks to a government program offering completely free bus rides.

The breakthrough? Switching from expensive imported fuel to Nigeria's abundant natural gas supply.

Governor Uba Sani launched the Free Compressed Natural Gas Mass Transit Scheme with 100 buses to cushion the blow after the government removed costly fuel subsidies last year. The buses run on compressed natural gas instead of petrol, slashing operating costs while keeping rides totally free for passengers.

In just 12 months, the program recorded 3.2 million passenger trips. That's millions of school commutes, hospital visits, and work journeys that didn't drain family budgets.

President Bola Tinubu took notice, publicly commending Kaduna's program as exactly the kind of people-focused intervention Nigeria needs. He's now urging the country's other 35 state governors to launch similar programs.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Global energy disruptions have sent fuel prices soaring worldwide, hitting transportation costs hard. Nigeria imports most of its refined petroleum despite being an oil producer, leaving citizens vulnerable to international price swings.

The federal government scrapped fuel subsidies to free up development funds, but transportation costs have climbed as a result. Natural gas offers a homegrown solution using Nigeria's own abundant resources.

An implementation committee led by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State is now working with all 36 states to identify priority transportation routes and expand CNG transit programs. The goal: measurable relief in commuting costs for ordinary Nigerians starting this October.

Kaduna's success proves that smart energy transitions can deliver immediate relief to families struggling with rising costs. When public policy focuses on everyday citizens rather than grand announcements, the results show up in household budgets.

Governor Sani's administration has made this philosophy central to its work, from tackling school dropout rates to expanding job training programs. The free bus program stands out as one of the most tangible responses to fuel subsidy removal across Nigeria.
