Nigeria Frees 9 Kidnapped Worshippers, Arrests 4 Suspects

Nine people who were kidnapped during a prayer vigil at St. John's Catholic Church in Benue State, Nigeria, are back with their families after a week-long ordeal. The rescue came after coordinated efforts between police and security agencies that resulted in four arrests and the seizure of an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.

Armed men stormed the church in Ado Local Government Area on February 8 during a midnight prayer session, taking six women and three men hostage. What followed was a determined response that would bring everyone home safely.

Police in Ado Division arrested the first two suspects on February 11 after receiving a tip from the community. The men were found carrying ammunition, and their arrest opened the door to finding the others involved.

Three days later, on February 14, officers raided a suspect's hideout and recovered an AK-47 rifle along with more ammunition. Two more suspects were arrested during that operation, both believed to be key members of the kidnapping group.

The sustained pressure from security operations across the region forced the kidnappers to release all nine victims unharmed on Saturday evening. Police confirmed that their investigation clearly linked the arrested suspects to the church abduction.

Governor Hyacinth Alia praised the quick response from security forces and the collaboration with local community groups. He had called a high-level security meeting on February 13, issuing orders for the immediate rescue of the victims.

The success of this operation goes beyond nine people coming home. It demonstrates how effective intelligence gathering and community cooperation can dismantle criminal networks that terrorize peaceful communities.

The Inspector-General of Police has now deployed aerial surveillance and additional tactical teams to Benue State to strengthen security operations further. This sustained commitment aims to deny criminals the space they need to operate.
