After spending two years detained on false terrorism charges, a Nigerian farmer walked free with compensation and help rebuilding his life. Nigeria's security service is reviewing hundreds of similar cases to right past wrongs.

A farmer from Kaduna State is rebuilding his livestock business after Nigeria's security service cleared him of false terrorism charges and paid him $6,000 in compensation. Nura Idris spent two years in detention before an internal review found zero evidence linking him to Boko Haram.

Idris was arrested in June 2024 while in Suleja, Niger State, and transferred to the Department of State Services. The agency's investigation review panel thoroughly reassessed his case and found nothing to support the allegations against him.

The DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi immediately ordered his release and authorized the N3 million payment (approximately $6,000). Beyond the cash compensation, the agency pledged additional support to help Idris restart the livestock business he lost during his detention.

"Following a thorough review of Nura's case, the DSS investigation panel found no basis for the charges against him," a security source told The Punch. Both Idris and his father expressed gratitude for the compensation, saying it would help their family move forward.

The Ripple Effect

This release is part of something bigger. The DSS launched an internal review exercise last year to reassess hundreds of inherited and prolonged detention cases, ensuring innocent people aren't sitting in custody unjustly.

The agency has already freed several others. Sunday Ifedi received $20,000 after being cleared of separatist charges in December 2025. Businesswoman Chineze Ozoadibe walked free with $20,000 in October 2025. Six other detainees received $4,000 each after investigations cleared them.

The DSS now provides comprehensive support to wrongly detained individuals. The agency offers psychological counseling, medical care, and business setup assistance to help people rebuild their lives after release.

Ya'u Mohammed from Yobe State was freed just last month after investigators confirmed he had no terrorism connections. Each release represents a family reunited and a life restored.

One case carries particular weight. The DSS is planning to rebuild a restaurant in memory of Calista Ifedi, who died in custody before being cleared alongside her husband.

Nigeria's security services are showing that accountability and justice can happen even after mistakes are made.
