Nigeria Funds 746 Students for Oil & Gas Grad Degrees

For 746 students in Nigeria's South-South region, dreams of advanced degrees just became reality without the burden of student debt.

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund is screening thousands of applicants for fully funded overseas scholarships in oil and gas fields. Between 5,885 and 6,193 candidates from across Nigeria's six regions made the shortlist from 38,398 initial applicants for the 2026/2027 program.

The South-South zone alone is interviewing 503 master's candidates and 243 doctoral candidates this April in Port Harcourt. The program covers tuition, living expenses, and everything students need so they can focus entirely on their studies without working side jobs.

Peter Egheneji, who leads the Port Harcourt screening center, emphasized the program's mission to develop Nigeria's oil and gas industry from within. Scholarship recipients sign agreements to return home after graduation and apply their expertise locally.

The diversity of applicants surprised even the interview panel. Professor Godwin Chukwu noted that candidates came from unexpected backgrounds like political science and law, yet many demonstrated how their unique perspectives could strengthen Nigeria's energy sector.

The Ripple Effect

This investment is already paying dividends beyond individual success stories. The newly appointed deputy manager at the University of Kaduna is a PTDF scholar now bringing international expertise back to Nigerian education.

Ifeoluwa Ajetunmobi, a current oil and gas worker applying for Engineering Management studies in the UK, sees clear gaps she wants to fill. She's observed that industry problems often stem from communication breakdowns and management issues rather than technical failures.

The application process itself reflects the program's professionalism. Ajetunmobi described a smooth digital experience with a flawless website, timely confirmations, and clear communication throughout.
