Nigeria Gets Two New STEAM Labs in Delta State Schools

Students at two public schools in Delta State can now design, experiment, and build solutions to real problems, thanks to newly installed STEAM laboratories.

The NNPC Exploration and Production Ltd and Seplat Energy partnership handed over the labs to Zappa Basic Secondary School and Asagba Mixed Secondary School in Asaba this week. These aren't just rooms with equipment. They're spaces where students can move from textbook theories to practical innovation.

Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs at Seplat Energy, says the labs give students the tools they need for 21st-century careers. "This represents a strong investment in the future of our students, our schools and our state," she explained during the handover ceremony.

The facilities mark the seventh STEAM laboratory Seplat has built in Delta State. Each one expands access to hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics for students who might otherwise never touch laboratory equipment.

Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education Kingsley Ashibogwu reminded students that failure is part of innovation. "Most great inventors you see today have attempted many times, failed many times, but succeeded once," he told students gathered at the ceremony.

The state government has already installed security cameras around both labs to protect the equipment. Officials want to ensure these resources serve students for years to come.

The Ripple Effect

Lawmaker Bridget Anyafulu says people often underestimate public schools in Nigeria, but these labs prove that investment can transform entire communities. When you educate a child, she noted, you prepare an entire community for success.

The impact could reach far beyond Asaba. Students using these labs today might become the medical doctors, engineers, and scientists solving Nigeria's biggest challenges tomorrow.

Teachers at both schools now have the capacity to provide practical instruction that brings science to life. Students can test ideas, build prototypes, and develop the confidence to tackle real-world problems.

The labs arrive at a crucial time when hands-on STEM education is becoming essential for Nigeria's technological advancement and economic development.
