Nigeria Golf Gets $50K Prize Boost from Oando Sponsorship

Nigerian professional golfers are getting a game-changing opportunity to earn international recognition without leaving home. Oil giant Oando Nigeria is backing the Lakowe Lakes Classic with enhanced prize money that's attracting top players from across Africa and putting world ranking points up for grabs on Nigerian soil.

The championship unfolds in two exciting phases at Lakowe Lakes Golf & Country Estate in Lagos. Nigerian professionals will first compete for a 30 million naira purse during the Nigeria Closed from September 28 to 30.

Then the tournament goes international from October 2 to 4, with players from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya and beyond competing for $50,000 in prize money. What makes this truly special is that participants will earn valuable world ranking points, a rare opportunity for African golfers who typically must travel abroad for such recognition.

"There is always something special about competing at home, but this is bigger than just playing in Nigeria," says Nigerian golfer Olapade Sunday. He's one of several Nigerian stars including Godwin Okoko, Andrew Odoh, Solomon Ideria, Francis Epe and Tajudeen Ajayi who will showcase their skills against Africa's best.

Manager Femi Olagbenro explains that Oando's involvement reinforces the championship's mission of creating stronger competitive opportunities for Nigerian professionals.
