Nigeria Governor Promises Aid After Shopping Center Fire

When fire swept through the SPAR shopping complex in Calabar last Saturday, dozens of business owners watched their livelihoods go up in smoke. Now, they're getting a promise of help from the very top.

Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu sent his deputy, Dr. Peter Odey, to the scene with a clear message: affected traders won't be left to recover alone. The state government plans to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to help businesses reopen.

"We want to see how government can support them to get back on their feet," Odey told gathered victims and media. He emphasized the response would go beyond sympathy, with concrete aid to help shops resume operations as soon as possible.

The exact cause remains under investigation, though early signs point to an electrical fault. What's already clear is that the disaster could have been much worse without the rapid response of local firefighters.

The Cross River State Fire Service arrived quickly and worked alongside federal firefighters to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading. Police secured the area to prevent looting, ensuring victims didn't face additional losses on top of the fire damage.

The state's Emergency Management Agency has already begun cataloging the damage and identifying immediate needs. Director-General teams are working to establish which victims need the most urgent relief and what kind of support will make the biggest difference.
