Nigeria Hits 96% HIV Viral Suppression Rate

Nigeria just scored a major win in the global fight against HIV, reaching a 96% viral suppression rate among people on treatment.

That number beats the international target of 95% set by UNAIDS. Out of 1.5 million Nigerians on antiretroviral therapy who were tested in the past year, 96% showed the virus was completely under control in their bodies.

Dr. Dennis Onotu from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Nigeria shared the breakthrough in June 2026. Viral suppression means the medication is working exactly as it should, keeping the virus from replicating and damaging the immune system.

When someone achieves viral suppression, they stay healthier and can't transmit HIV to others through sex or from mother to child during pregnancy. It's a double win for individual patients and public health.

The country used a new global strategy that focuses on regular viral load testing and treatment adherence. Patients who take their medication consistently and correctly can expect the virus to become undetectable in their blood.
