Nigeria Hosts Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos

Nigerian fencers are gearing up to make their country proud when Lagos hosts the Commonwealth Fencing Championships from August 9 to 14, 2026. For the first time, home fans will get to cheer on their athletes as they face off against some of the world's best fencers.

Adebodunri Thomas, Nigeria's top female épée fencer, is ready for the challenge ahead. She recently competed at the African Fencing Championships and knows the Commonwealth event will push her even further.

"I've trained every day since returning from school, working with my coach on new techniques," Thomas said. Her goal is to reach the last 16, just like she did at the Junior African Championships, while testing herself against elite international competition.

Fellow team member Alex Chizim Aninyei sees the championship as a golden opportunity to grow. "I look forward to competing against different fencers from around the world, gaining experience and testing the skills I have developed over the years," he explained. His plan is simple: qualify from the pool stage, advance to the direct elimination rounds, and bring home a medal.

National Coach Ibrahim Alogba believes this team has what it takes to succeed. "Our team is stronger now and more united than before," he said, pointing to the chemistry and international experience they've built through recent world-class tournaments.

Hosting a major international championship does more than just put Nigerian athletes in the spotlight. It introduces fencing to new audiences across the country and shows young Nigerians they can compete at the highest levels in any sport.
