Nigeria Interviews 5,885 for Oil & Gas Scholarships Abroad

Almost 6,000 Nigerian graduates got one step closer to pursuing advanced degrees abroad this week, as the country's Petroleum Technology Development Fund began interviews for its 2026 overseas scholarship program.

Out of more than 38,000 applicants, 5,885 candidates made the shortlist based on their academic achievements and relevant work experience. The interviews started April 7 and will run through April 17 across six cities representing each of Nigeria's geographic regions.

"We have our own parameters," said Bello Mustapha, Deputy General Manager of Education and Training at PTDF. "Applicants must meet specific academic requirements such as first class, second class upper, or in some cases second class lower degrees, alongside relevant work experience and strong academic records."

The scholarship winners will study at partner universities in Germany, France, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. The program focuses on petroleum-related disciplines but also covers fields like management and petroleum law that support the energy sector.

What makes this program unique is its commitment to geographic equity. Each Nigerian state receives a specific number of slots, with oil-producing states getting additional allocations to reflect their role in the industry.

The Federal Character Commission monitors the selection process to ensure transparency and fairness. Interview panels are working simultaneously in Abuja, Bauchi, Kaduna, Rivers, Enugu, and Oyo to evaluate candidates from their respective regions.
