Nigeria Launches Nutrition 774 to Feed 220M Citizens

Nigeria just took a major step toward ending childhood malnutrition by putting local leaders in charge of feeding their communities.

Vice President Kashim Shettima directed all 774 local government chairmen to implement the Nutrition 774 Initiative, a groundbreaking program designed to improve food security and nutrition outcomes in every corner of Africa's most populous nation. The announcement came during a meeting with local government leaders in Abuja on Friday.

The initiative transforms how Nigeria addresses malnutrition by placing responsibility directly in the hands of community leaders who best understand their residents' needs. Each local government will establish Food and Nutrition Committees that serve as planning, coordination, and accountability centers.

"National concern must become institutional action, institutional action must become measurable outcomes, and measurable outcomes must be reflected in healthier families, stronger communities, and children whose opportunities in life are no longer constrained by preventable malnutrition," Shettima told the gathered leaders.

The program comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where preventable malnutrition continues to limit children's potential and strain family resources. By strengthening the closest tier of government to the people, the initiative aims to close gaps that have weakened previous national nutrition efforts.

Local government chairmen will work alongside the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to build functional structures capable of delivering measurable improvements. The program focuses on increasing agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, improving food storage and processing, supporting household farming, and promoting local value chains.

By empowering local governments with clear directives and accountability structures, the administration is betting that grassroots action will succeed where top-down approaches have struggled.

ALGON President Bello Lawal praised the initiative as an opportunity to strengthen local food systems while directly improving lives. The association has already begun validating pilot areas and collaborating with nutrition experts and development partners to ensure effective implementation.

Vice President Shettima reminded the leaders that history would judge them not by how long they served, but by the quality of service they delivered to their constituents.

With 774 local governments now mobilized to tackle malnutrition, millions of Nigerian families have new reason to hope for healthier, stronger futures.
