Scientists Race to Save World's Bananas from Deadly Fungus

After more than a decade of watching a deadly fungus slowly destroy banana farms, scientists are finally winning the race to save the world's most popular fruit.
Panama disease tropical race 4 (TR4) has devastated 11 banana farms in Queensland, Australia, threatening the Cavendish variety that makes up 97% of bananas eaten worldwide. The soil-borne fungus attacks banana plants through their roots and lives in the ground for decades, making it impossible to eliminate.
But breakthrough solutions are arriving just in time. Queensland University of Technology developed the world's first genetically modified banana specifically designed to resist TR4, which looks and tastes identical to regular Cavendish bananas.
Named QCAV-4, the modified banana passed rigorous government safety testing and was approved for commercial growing in 2024. While no farms are growing it commercially yet, researcher Anthony James says growers in affected areas are eager to start trials.
"Growers in the Tully Valley would love to see our bananas trialled more extensively," James said. His team's commercialization department is working with farmers and retailers to bring the resistant variety to market.
Other teams are using traditional crossbreeding methods with equally promising results. North Queensland Banana Research expects to release their first TR4-resistant Cavendish variety by 2028, with 30 to 40 hybrid varieties currently in development.
"We've got two we're working with and one clear frontrunner," said researcher Naomi Abbott, who's collaborating with a Honduran breeding program.
The Bright Side
The progress comes as a relief to farmers like Leon Collins, chair of the Australian Banana Growers' Council, whose own farm recently became the 11th to test positive for TR4. Despite the heartbreak of losing crops, Collins remains optimistic about the future.
"I believe our saviour is going to be plant breeding," he said.
Meanwhile, strict biosecurity measures have successfully kept TR4 contained to one region, protecting Australia's largest banana-growing area 50 kilometers north. Nearby farmer Adrian Crema, whose farm remains disease-free, said he's "really, really happy" about the research progress.
The resistant varieties represent hope not just for Australian growers, but for banana lovers worldwide who depend on the affordable, nutritious fruit that's a staple in kitchens across the globe.
