Nigerian parent using smartphone to register child's birth on new VitalReg digital platform

Nigeria Launches Online Birth Registration Platform

😊 Feel Good

Nigeria just made it possible for parents to register births and deaths from their phones, ending the need for long trips to government offices. The new digital system went live July 1st across all 36 states.

Millions of Nigerian parents no longer need to travel to government offices or wait in long lines to register their children's births.

The National Population Commission launched VitalReg, a digital platform that lets Nigerians register births and deaths online from anywhere in the country. The system became operational nationwide on July 1, 2026, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Dr. Aminu Yusuf, the commission's chairman, announced the platform at a press briefing in Abuja. He called it "one of the most transformative reforms in the history of civil registration in Nigeria."

The digital system provides 24-hour online access, instant certificate issuance, and secure data storage. Parents can now complete the entire registration process without leaving home, eliminating paperwork and unnecessary travel.

The change comes at a critical time. Nigeria records about five million births every year, but only 57 percent currently get registered. Death registration sits even lower at under 20 percent, leaving millions of Nigerians without legal identity documents needed for school enrollment, healthcare, and other essential services.

The commission has already established 4,011 registration centers across Nigeria's 774 local government areas. They're working to expand that network to 8,000 centers to reach even more communities.

The Ripple Effect

When children receive birth certificates, doors open. They can enroll in school, access healthcare, and claim their rights as citizens. The registration data also helps the government plan better services, from building schools to distributing vaccines where they're needed most.

The platform connects with Nigeria's broader digital identity system, making it easier for citizens to access other government services. The commission partnered with UNICEF, local governments, and technology companies to bring registration services directly to communities.

Birth registration and notification services remain highly subsidized to ensure every family can afford them. Some specialized services like certificate reissuance will carry reviewed fees to maintain the digital infrastructure, but the commission stressed these won't create barriers to basic registration.

Nigeria joins a growing number of African countries using technology to strengthen civil registration systems and guarantee every child a legal identity from birth.
