Nigeria Opens 16km Road, Approves More for Abuja Communities

Thousands of Nigerian commuters can now travel safely between six major Abuja communities thanks to a newly completed road project that restores what officials call "dignity to daily movement."

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday opened the rehabilitated 16-kilometer Old Keffi Road, which connects Kado Fish Market through Life Camp to Dei-Dei Junction. The corridor serves residents and businesses across Kado, Saburi, Gwagwa, Karmo, Idu and Dei-Dei, areas that previously struggled with poor road conditions.

The project includes new asphalt, street lighting for safer nighttime travel, and drainage systems to protect homes and markets from flooding. Transportation costs are expected to drop as travel time between communities decreases.

"This is not a promise on paper," Tinubu said at the commissioning ceremony. "It is asphalt you can drive on, lights you can trust after dark and drainages that serve both homes and markets."

The road rehabilitation began after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reported the corridor's deplorable condition to the President. Traders and residents had repeatedly requested the upgrade, especially after a nearby road project was completed.

In an unexpected moment during the event, residents from three neighboring communities displayed banners asking for help with their own access roads. Tinubu responded by immediately approving construction of the Kaba-Kagini-Zaudna Road and directing contractors to begin work right away.

"The whole essence of the Renewed Hope Agenda is to restore hope where people have lost hope," Wike explained. The on-the-spot approval demonstrated the administration's commitment to addressing infrastructure needs quickly.

The Ripple Effect

The completed road represents more than easier commutes. It connects major commercial centers, meaning vendors at Kado Fish Market can move goods more efficiently while shoppers from surrounding neighborhoods gain better access to essential services.

Improved connectivity between these six communities strengthens economic activity across the entire corridor. Lower transportation costs help both businesses and families stretch their budgets further.

The project also signals a broader shift in how Nigeria's capital handles infrastructure. Tinubu declared the completion marks "the end of abandoned projects in Abuja," pointing to multiple roads unveiled during recent weeks as evidence of consistent follow-through.

Area councils beyond the city center are now receiving the same development attention as central districts. The administration has committed to ensuring every community, not just wealthy neighborhoods, benefits from infrastructure improvements.

Residents of Kaba, Kagini and Zaudna won't have to wait long for their approved road project either. Construction company Lubrik has been instructed to mobilize immediately and begin building the new corridor.
