Nigeria Promotes 3,592 Civil Servants in Merit Program

More than 3,500 government workers in Nigeria's capital just got the career boost they've been working toward.

The Federal Capital Territory promoted 3,592 civil servants after they completed rigorous exams in July. Senior officers took their tests over three days in early July, while junior staff sat for theirs on July 10.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike approved the promotions as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu's third anniversary in office. Civil Service Commission Chairman Emeka Ezeh announced the results, emphasizing that every promotion was earned through merit and competitive testing.

The timing matters. In many countries, government workers face stagnant careers and delayed advancement, which can drain morale and discourage talented people from public service.

But the FCT is taking a different approach. Wike has already directed the commission to start the 2026 promotion exercise immediately, ensuring eligible workers won't face unnecessary delays in their career progression.

"Under this administration, it is a priority that FCT workers get promoted as and when due," Ezeh said. The goal is to make sure the people building the territory's infrastructure feel valued alongside the physical improvements happening around them.
